England captain inspires the next generation in Somerset

Chance to Shine England Women Coaching Ambassadors Charlotte Edwards and Heather Knight have been an inspirational influence across the girls player pathway during their two day visit to Somerset.

The England players were involved in primary school cricket: delivering an energetic Spirit of Cricket assembly in Weston and signing autographs and answering questions at an ASDA Kwik Cricket tournament in Nailsea. They also shared their top tips during secondary school visits: coaching girls at Writhlington Academy and Millfield school followed by question and answer sessions. Charlotte and Heather continued making an impact on the elite pathway too as they coached the County U15 Girls team in their friendly T20 match against Millfield School prior to presenting a captaincy workshop to all the leaders in County Age Group girls cricket. The U13 and U17 county players were all treated to a tactical theory session along with specialist fielding practice to top off a fantastic couple of days with international role models in Somerset.

Charlotte Edwards said “It’s been really enjoyable for Heather and I to be a part of Somerset Cricket Board’s commitment to girls cricket across the pathway. I’ve been really impressed with the standard of County players and I look forward to hearing how their season goes following our sessions on captaincy, tactics and fielding. As role models we play an important part across the whole pathway so to fit in what we have over the last two days was very worthwhile. Certainly the loudest part of the camp was the singing along to the Spirit of Cricket assembly DVD at Oldmixon Primary School which now has a great link to Weston-super-Mare Cricket Club thanks to Chance to Shine.”

Somerset Cricket Board’s Women and Girls Head Coach Caroline Atkins said “Having two current England players share their enthusiasm and expertise in Somerset has been absolutely brilliant for our programme. Not many sportspeople will ever get the chance to attend a captaincy workshop from a World Cup winning Captain. In fact the whole two days were filled with highlights thanks to Chance to Shine providing inspirational role models in our schools, clubs and county programmes. I really hope we can welcome Charlotte and Heather back over the winter to follow-up the wonderful impact they had with this camp.”
